Samurai Sentai SHINKENGER

by Von Fritz Evangelista

Samurai Sentai SHINKENGER is the third super sentai series that I’m done watching. But it’s supposed to be the second…if I didn’t decide to watch GO-ONGER first. Plus, I was bored in the first few episodes so I focused on the fun of Sousuke’s squad. But it turns out that things got better in the middle of the series. So I decided to finish it as soon as possible (hungry for moar).

As the title suggests, the series is themed on the samurai lifestyle. All about Japan…which makes it unique. Bushiddo, sushi, katakana, kabuki…it’s like knowing much Japanese culture while you watch the series. At first I thought…what the F? How could they make a toku with such traditional concept? But well, expect the unexpected. Everything turned out just fine.

The squad is headed by ShinkenRed Shiba Takeru, a serious kind of Red Ranger. His mates are ShinkenBlue Ryunusuke, ShinkenGreen Chiaki, ShinkenPink Mako, and ShinkenYellow Kotoha. They’re a bunch of kids with different personalities…gawd, I can’t even tell who’s my favorite. All of them guided by Kusakabe whom they call Jii-san and together they fight the Gedoshuu headed by the evil Chimatsuri Doukoku. In the middle of the series, ShinkenGold appears in the person of Genta…a sushi seller. He’s different. Well I guess, he’s my fave character in the series.

Okay, I can’t say much about the series…actually, with all the super sentai series that I watched. It’s like…it’s complicated. You just can’t say that it’s good or bad and so on. There’s a lot of surprises in every episode.

But lemme cite the difference of Shinkenger to the other sentai series that I watched (well, comparing it to Jetman and Go-Onger). Shinkenger is serious…honestly. That’s why I said I was bored in the first few episodes. Even with Takeru…he’s not my Red Ranger type. Being serious, neatness follows. All the fight scenes are neat, with all those sword clashing sequences. Neat acting. Neat dialogues. Neat villains. Unlike in Go-Onger and in Jetman.

I loved the origamis. The different versions and the like. But gawd, I was definitely turned off with the ultimate robot Ha-Oh. It’s epicness didn’t convince me. I mean…how would you call that a combined robot with some parts just in the background? Haha. Really…I dunno how did they came to that. And even my sentai addict friends agree.

Speaking of the villains, I love them. It’s the kind of love that I felt with the Vyram and the Gaiark. It’s not that they’re so bad as hell. It’s their drama. No bias since I really love villains for reals. Dayuu and Juuzou are epic…not to mention Akumaro who almost brought doomsday to Japan. Doukoku didn’t impress me much but he proved himself boss somehow. Bravo on the final battle.

Shiba Kaoru impressed me. I mean…yeah, she’s the effin twist in the last five episodes. But really, she made it clear that she will be remembered. Of course…the first female official Red Ranger they say?

I hate to admit it but the ending was kinda disturbing. You know, the way they presented it…all of Takeru’s friends saying goodbye one by one. And LONELINESS it is. It made me sad. But that’s better than one of them dying (unlike in Jetman, haha).

Appare Shinkenjaa!
