I swear I’m not fond of slice of life anime or manga. It’s just that I have enough of reality and I find it redundant watching or reading such genre.
Not until I discovered a good slice of life manga early this year. And since then I’m hooked. I realized it’s not about the redundancy. These slice of life stories reminds us of everything…of things we have forgotten.
I can say Ano Hana is my first official slice of life pick. I mean, yeah, I used to watch slice of life anime back then…like Sarah, Cedie, A Dog of Flanders, etc. But I wasn’t serious. With Ano Hana, I wanted to digest everything. It’s my first real time appreciation and I savored every second of it. And thanks to Vench for the recommendation.
I’m just saying the other title ‘Ano Hana’ because the main title is kinda long… ‘We Still Don’t Know The Name of the Flower We Saw That Day’. Well, that’s one thing that hooked me up, the long title. And since the first episode, I’ve been curious about the flower too.
Ano Hana is a tale of childhood friends…Menma, Jintan, Yukiatsu, Anaru, Tsuruko, and Poppo. The six of them make up the Super Peace Busters. Each with different personalities and haunted by a tragic past.
Menma is the nice girl and everyone likes her. She’s so nice that all the boys like her while the other girls envy her. She’s the one who died some years ago and is back in the present as a ghost (that only Jintan can see) to reunite her friends. She will not attain Nirvana unless she her secret wish is granted.
Jintan is the leader. And I think he’s the most important character in the story. He can see the ghost of Menma and he’s guilty of that tragedy that happened in the past. It’s obvious in the series that he loved Menma and now that the girl’s back, he tries to help her attain Nirvana by granting her wish.
Anaru is the geek-turned-bitchy girl who envied Menma so much because she likes Jintan. When Menma passed away, Anaru thought she could have Jintan all for herself but it’s the other way around.
Yukiatsu is the tsundere boy. He acted tough…but he had this secret feelings for Menma. And it’s the reason why he hated Jintan so much…because Jintan and Menma like each other.
Tsuruko is the tsundere girl. She’s best buds with Yukiatsu…and is secretly in love with him. And since she knows Yukiatsu’s in love with Menma, she envied Menma too. Though, it’s revealed in the end that she actually envied Anaru because with Menma gone, Yukiatsu may turn to Anaru.
Poppo is the happy-go-lucky guy who travels the world and is desperate to reunite his friends. He’s like a mediator in the story. He wasn’t involved in any love affair but deep inside him is guilt of what happened in the past.
The story revolved around these four characters…transcending past and present in every episode. In the past, they’re these bunch of kids who knew nothing but fun and who cared for each other so much. In the present, they’re these bunch of teenagers who pretend to despise each other and want to move on but just can’t. It’s the sad reality that the anime mirrors in me. Yes, I had lotsa childhood friends back then. Nowadays, we’re nothing but strangers.
A ghost? At first the story is some kind of paranormal. But as you go along with the story, the reality is overflowing that fantasy itself is drowned. You won’t care whether Menma is a real ghost or a hallucination or just a bittersweet memory.
Every episode is a tearjerker. Guaranteed. But maybe for the shallow tear ducts. Honestly, I never shed a tear. I dunno. There were episodes that are heartcrushing…and yet I find myself unable to cry. Maybe it’s not the kind of sadness that can make me cry. Especially in the finale…gawd, everyone’s crying…I wanted to cry with them and I can’t. Though, I bluffed online that I’m crying buckets for the heck of it.
Lotsa interesting things mentioned in conversations. There’s One Piece and Pokemon and Dog of Flanders…and what? McDonalds? Haha. The makers of this anime are so intelligent. I salute them. How could they make something unique and interesting out of simple plot involving childhood friends? And I definitely love the art (and I keep on telling Vench it might be because of the high res copy he gave me). The music is so good too…I always hum the opening and ending songs.
I definitely give this anime 5 stars. It’s incomparable. Everything I love in life is in this anime…childhood, memories, growing up, intellectual blabs…just see for yourselves.
